In reply to: Tony Atkinson posted an update: here is the report i sent to the gazette. it would be good if people could add to this in terms of the contestants and anything else they feel should be included. that way we may […] ViewAlthough I didn’t think anything of it when I read is; Kat is right, Tony, the gender emphasis, although positively intended, is unnecessary; and so, ever so subtly, implies an unfortunate assumption that the winners will be male. I realise that is not your assumption but we do need to ask ourselves whether anyone would make any reference to…[Read more]

I also found out in the course of my research for this piece that there is a type of cuckoo in Australia whose song is upside-down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoBlkaGJk4s (clearly the uploader of this clip is not a fan).

Thanks so much Kat!! It actually reads rather clunkily to me now, I think partly because it was written specifically to perform – and I also think maybe I was so focussed on trying to get it learned that I didn’t pay as much attention to the language as I otherwise would. Those finals were [...]

The internet says he once spoke so eloquently that a wolf who had killed his ox was moved to ask if it could pull his plough in its stead.
It must have been *really* good if people were more excited by his speech than the wolf’s.

Thanks for posting this Tim! St. Hervé’s day this year is going to be the first morning I wake up in America on what is a very important trip for me – to meet a dear friend I haven’t seen in person for nearly ten years and who is also a long-term writing collaborator. I’ll [...]

In reply to: Kali Roberts posted an update: My first poem… I was 10 when I wrote this. I find it so interesting that our first poems say alot about us! Surprised that I was so political, even at that age. South Africa In […] ViewThe whole poem speaks of our frustration at the way humans treat each other but the final couplet in particular is powerful, moving and insightful; applicable to every conflict.

Wes White commented on the blog post apologies for not replying to some of you, i have just returned from a week in portugal. i wrote a piece about kali and the gorsedh final for the gazette before i left but it didn’t make it in i see. it may have been too late as it was submitted on monday night/tuesday morning. hopefully they will include it on thursday as they helped with the build-up and it is important that the winner is visible following the event, i think. 11 months, 3 weeks ago
Welcome back Tony, hope your words are included in the paper tomorrow.

This was my 2009 entry for the Open Gorsedd on the theme “All that Glisters is Not Gold”. I almost certainly pronounced quite a few of these names quite wrongly, so apologies for any wincing this might have provoked at the time. In particular I was glad to think I was the only one who’d [...]

Okay, being honest, I’m drawing a blank on ‘pallusy’ (phallusy pun on fallacy?) – but otherwise – amazing!

Well I am glad to have had a part in making this happen. ; )

Wow – thanks so much for this reaction Amber! It’s just as it appears here, a very short piece which hopes to suggest a wider story. It’s interesting what you say about the differences in the ways any of us write – it was partly your lines about prints on the sky and Kat’s ‘grainy [...]
